Ethics approval

Hi all,

Just a quick note to let everyone know ethics approval has been granted and we can start data collection any time now.

As you prepare to record participants, make sure that you read the instructions carefully and that you have everyone sign the consent form for the study.

Also, feel free to use this blog to leave comments on your data collection experience.

September 5th update

Hi everyone,
First off, thanks so much for having attended the meeting on Friday. It’s inspiring to see students are so eager to do some real data collection!

I've sent out an email attaching most of the documents I distributed at the Friday meeting (i.e. instructions, plain language statement and consent form). Please take some time to read through these documents carefully as they contain vital information. The instructions document is particularly important as it explains what the research is about and how to go about collecting the data. On that note, remember that you may not start data collection until ethics clearance has been finalized. I will let you know as soon as that happens.

In the meantime, make sure you secure a voice recording device (I have one to lend if people are interested). It’s always best to have two recording devices just in case one fails to do its job.
I’d also appreciate it if you could think about how many different speakers you may be able to record while conversing and as part of the sociolinguistic interview. I would need for you to specify:

 speaker’s age

 speaker’s gender

 educational background (if known)

This way I can begin to put together the table outlining our potential research sample.
